Lightheart woke in her den, light seeping through the entrance. She yawned and stretched, getting up and padding out of the den.

The young Mystic gazed up at the sky, wondering what today held. 'I truely hope there won't be an attack today. We do not need the battle now.'

She sat and began to lick her shoulders, waiting for the rest of the Tribe to wake up.

Blackwing, in his usual strut of a walk, stepped outside of his den. He shook the moisture out of his fur and stalked somewhat moodily to the edges of the camp.

‘Still no sign of the patrol that was sent out two days ago,’ he thought to himself. ‘They were supposed to be gone for one day and one night at the most. What stopped them…? It couldn’t be another Tribe; I picked our best Fighters myself. Could it be the invading bareskin?’ The large, black tom shuddered at the thought. Despite his confidence and strength, he knew that even he would not stand up well against such a powerful enemy.

The Deputy made his rounds, checking on each of the groups in turn. First the nursery and the Queens with their kits, then off to the Elders and then the Learners and Fighters dens. He then sauntered over to the Mystic and ducked in.

“Lightheart,” he said, greeting her quickly with a nod of his large head, “Have you seen any of the patrol I sent out a few days ago?”

Lightheart watched as Blackwing did a quick check-over of the camp. She turned to him, her large glowing eyes calm but tinted with worry. "Good morning, Blackwing." she greeted. "I'm sorry. I haven't seen any of the cats. How many days has it been? Three?"

“About that,” Blackwing said, holding back a growl. “I’m going outside the camp to search for them. If I have not returned by sunrise tomorrow,…do not search for me.”

‘I only hope that Dawnstar can keep up with my thoughts.’ Blackwing mused as he stretched his legs and then dashed off into the surrounding jungle.

It was particularly muggy that day and the rain from the night before was still in the air. It clung to his thick fur and slowed him a little. However, the large Bombay cat was hardly fazed and kept running, muscles straining as he searched for his lost Tribemates.

Flamemit yawned loudly, exposing his thorn-sharp teeth. It was another warm morning in the jungle. It was thick and muggy, too - beads of moisture started to form on the end of the tom's whiskers. Not that he wasn't used to it; he'd lived all his life in the jungle. The learner started to groom his shoulder with quick, rough strokes. I wonder what Blackwing has in store for me today? he thought with excitement. I hope we do battle training today! I'm going to take him down! Flamemit's claws flexed.

He spotted his dark mentor with his head stuck in the Mystic's den. The learner snorted and started to trot over. No doubt he was passing the red tom off the the Mystic to see what grunt work was needed. But Blackwing ducked back out of the den and stretched. Flamemit's hopes picked up again. And again, before the learner got close, his mentor bolted through the camp entrance and off into the undergrowth.

"Aw, man, I knew it! Blackwing dumped me with Lightheart so that he could go do cool deputy stuff. Why doesn't he ever take me along?" The red tom's tail drooped and his ears pinned back.

He stumbled into the Mystic's den, head down and radiating waves of irritation. He didn't look at the she-cat while he talked. "I saw my mentor talk to you before he left. What do you want me to do?"

Lightheart saw Flamemitt walk in, obviously irritated. She padded over and smiled gently. "Blackwing is off on a search for the missing Fighters. Meanwhile, why don't you tell me what you two were working on and we can pick up from there?" she suggested. She looked frail but she could pack a bite. She was not an oppontent to be taken lightly, even if she was a Mystic.

She sat across from Flamemitt, feeling a bit sory for the Learner. He wanted to train to be a great Fighter like his mentor, but Blackwing-as deputy-was gone quite a bit. Lightheart usually trained with him, knowing it wasn't the same, but still...

Blackwing’s large mass rushed through the forest at top speed. All of his senses were toned and keen on picking up any traces of his Fighters. After a while of searching, the enormous Deputy was worn out. He collapsed on the ground and panted, breathing hard.

After a few minutes of rest, he eased himself back to his feet and walked over to a small stream. Drinking slowly from it, he contemplated his situation. He knew he was not far from the edge of their territory, and he felt that he should have his guard up.

Before he could even turn around, he smelled a familiar scent.

‘That’s them,’ the Deputy thought, his green eyes brightening. He turned around to greet his comrades when he smelt blood sift through the air. Narrowing his eyes, the Bombay watched as his Fighters staggered into sight and fell to the ground, covered in blood.

“No cat could have done this,” he growled. He slid the two new Fighters, still younger and small, onto his back. Picking up the third Fighter by the scruff of her neck, Blackwing padded slowly back to camp.

The cats stunk of blood and seemed to be unconscious. Slowed a little by their weight, it took him over an hour before he was able to return to the camp, where he crashed almost senselessly through the brush of the forest and fell on to the ground with a large ‘plumph’ that made dust rise in a cloud around the black tom.

Exhausted, Blackwing did not move.

Lightheart heard a thump. She dashed out of the den and ran across the camp and gasped. Blackwing was carrying the three missing Fighters. Swinging into action she grabbed one cat by the scruff of his neck and gently but quickly dragged him to the den. She got the other two then sniffed Blackwing.

She turned to Flamemitt and said quickly, "Get him something to eat, and take him to the Deputy den. I'll be there with some poppyseed later." She dashed back into the Mystic's den and began working on their wounds vigorously.

She pressed cobwebs on the bleeding cuts, having to stop the bleeding before she could treat them properly. 'Oh please let them live! Let me be able to help them!' she thought desperately.
