Sunmitt yawned and stretched, his back arching before straightening. He padded out of the Learner's cave and murmured, "I wonder what I'm supposed to do to train today."
Petaltail had been up all night. The lack of Fighters in their clan this season was ridiculous, so she thought, and had chosen to let her companions rest while she scouted in search of any danger.
The young female deputy wandered back into the heart of the camp. 'Surely my Chief is still asleep,' she thought, not wanting to disturb them.
Seeing her new Learner, Sunmitt, standing near the edge of the Learner's cave, Petaltail padded over quietly. "Good morning, young one," she smiled kindly. "Are you ready for today? I know we have only been training a few days now, but you are doing well and I expect very much from you." Without needing to tell him to follow, Petaltail turned and began walking outside the camp.
"Today we will practice more on your hunting skills. Please remember what I told you about staying still and listening. The best way to catch prey is to let it come to you. Also, in this way you are protecting yourself from potential enemies."
Petaltail led him into the forest and sat down. "Please demonstrate to me what you have learned in the past few days."
Sunmitt bowed his head. "Good morning, Petaltail. I'm ready." He followed her outside of camp.
His fur gleaming in the morning sun, as he looked around. He focused on what Petaltail was saying, determined to make his mentor proud.
He nodded as she asked him to demonstrate what he learned. He lifted his head and waited. Soon he caught the scent of a small anteater not far from here. It would be a bit bigger than he was used to, but it was practice.
He slid into a crouch, slowly creeping forward. He stopped a few times to listen and make sure the anteater hadn't heard or smelt him. When he was about three tail-lengths away he launched himself at it and tackled it, landing on it's back. The anteater squealed and tried to get Sunmitt off it's back. Sunmitt bit it's neck hard, and the anteater slowed down. Sunmitt bit down harder, and it stopped. Sunmitt got off its' back and waited, hoping he had done it right.
Petaltail sank into the grass and watched Sunmitt as he took down a baby anteater. Once the task was complete, she stood up after listening for predators. Sunmitt looked at Petaltail with a face asking how he did. Petaltail walked over and inspected his work.
“The first part was very good. You were quiet and waited for an opportunity to come from the back, while still avoiding making noise and revealing your position to both prey and predator. I would have gotten just a little closer. If the anteater had moved, you wouldn’t have had a chance to swerve and correct yourself. Also, dig in with your claws as well to get a better hold so you can bite. Apart from that,…well done. Follow me back to camp. I’ll let you drag the prize back.”
Petaltail began walking back to camp, feeling rather satisfied that her student had indeed learned from her.
Sunmitt nodded as he listened to his mentor's advice. He was already working on how to inprove in his mind.
He jumped up and dragged his catch back to camp, still happy he had done well and learned from it. He couldn't wait to improve more and become a great Fighter.
Petaltail brought her student back into camp and led him to the freshkill pile before facing him. Her eyes glinted in the sunlight showing pride.
“You have been a Learner for only a few days now, but you are progressing rapidly. Soon you will make a fine Fighter, I am sure of it Sunmitt. I have some business to attend to, so please go hunting with one of your denmates. When you have each finished catching two prey, please feed the elders, queens and kits.” She nodded farewell to her Learner and padded off.
Pawing her way through the slippery rocks of the waterfall, Petaltail came to the entrance of the cave that held the Tribe’s Mystic, Redwing. She wandered inside, jungle vines hanging off the ceiling of the entrance brushed against her soft, groomed fur and the smell of herbs rushed into her delicate pink nose.
“Hello, Redwing,” she greeted the Mystic warmly. “I promised I would help you collect plants today. What is it I can do for you?”
A small, ginger tabby tom fretted about in the back of his den, muttering to himself and complaining. He shuffled around piles of dried herbs on stone shelves that jutted out from one wall of his rocky den. A pleasant gurgling noise told I'd a small stream of water. It was run-off from the waterfall that trickled down the back wall of the den and emptied into a shallow depression. It was rather convenient when the mystic had sick cats to attend to.
"I'm very low on coca leaves!" he berated. "How did I let that happen? And I need cobwebs and cashew leaves and..."
Redwing didn't hear the approaching pawsteps of his Tribemate until she pushed past the vines. "Hello, Redwing," the mystic jumped. "I promised I would help you collect plants today. What is it I can do for you?"
The tom stared wide-eyed at the she-cat for a brief moment before recognizing her. It was Petaltail, the Tribe deputy. He let out a sigh and pit a smile on his maw. "O-Oh, h-hi Petaltail. I-I was just getting ready to leave. We'll need to go to the far side of the territory for some herbs that grow near the border. Normally, I'd go alone, but you know how the Tribes aren't getting along..."
He got up and padded closer to the deputy. He did stop a good distance away, though. The closer he got to the pretty she-cat, the hotter he felt under his fur. The mystic smiled, but the was no doubt it looked stupid.
Petaltail giggled shyly. "Redwing, you do not need to stutter around me. Be at ease." She looked out of the den at the beautiful waterfalls.
"I will accompany you, and I will be sure to protect you from any danger. After all, you have no apprentice...we cannot afford to lose our only Mystic." Though her reasoning had logic, Petaltail had always felt a soft spot for the timid cat. She had always liked his sense of humor, and though they had never been particularly close Petaltail had always admired him from afar.
'You have grown much,' Petaltail thought, 'I hope you can show me who you are now.'
"Let's go then," the young Deputy smiled, small teeth glinting from the sun's reflection on the water. She stepped lightly out of the cave and gracefully stepped above the waterfalls, where they would begin their journey to the other side of the territory.

"Redwing, you do not need to stutter around me. Be at ease."
If only that were as easy as you made it sound, pretty she-cat.
"I will accompany you, and I will be sure to protect you from any danger. After all, you have no apprentice... we cannot afford to lose our only Mystic." Petaltail said logically.
There was good reason behind what she said. The tom had always considered himself a rather young Mystic, however, and did not feel the need to seek out an learner yet. It was nice to know that the Tribe cared about him, though. "It would be costly to lose our deputy, too." he mewed, more to himself than the she-cat.
"Let's go then." She smiled, teeth catching the reflection of the sun off the waterfall. She stepped out of his cave and made her way above the waterfalls. Redwing followed, but with absolutely no grace. He gave his pelt a shake to rearrange it.
"I'll lead the way, I guess." He mewed, lacking self confidence, and padded off to the far reaches of their territory.

Redwing dropped a bundle of sweet-scented leaves onto the forest floor. He had five other piles of leaves, and he wasn't quite sure how he was going to get them home. The Mystic started at the leaves for a few seconds. Through some miraculous ability, he was able to shove three bundles in his mouth. He looked over at the other two and back to Petaltail. "Uh, c-could you..." he trailed off. With a maw full of leaves, it sounded more like confused mumbling than a request, but he hoped she got the idea.

Petaltail watched as the Mystic bounded somewhat clumsily after her and up to the top of the falls. She had heard him murmur something before she left, but had not heard it. Slightly embarrassed at her careless hearing, Petaltail only hoped the Mystic had not asked a question, should she seem rude for not answering.
Since there had been no chatter since the cave, Petaltail was now confident she had not missed anything of true importance.
“I’ll lead the way, I guess,” the Mystic mewled quietly. Petaltail nodded and followed loyally.
The young Mystic led Petaltail all over the territory, collecting herbs until they reached the outermost part of the Tribe’s markings. Petaltail watched as Redwing collected leaf after leaf until he had five large bundles before him.
Taking three in his mouth, he meowed something that was quite incoherent. The Deputy was not dumb, however, and figured he had asked her to carry the other two bundles. Petaltail let a catty little giggle slip out and she smiled.
“I’ll never guess how you ran so low on herbs.” She carefully grasped the two bundles in her mouth, though it was hard, and she was forced to try several different grips before finding one that would be suitable for the time being. Nodding at Redwing, she signaled for him to follow.

The deputy giggled and smiled at his incoherent babble. An embarrassed blush formed under the mystic's fur and he smiled stupidly back; it did look stupid this time because of the three bundles of leaves in his mouth.
"I'll never guess how you ran so low on herbs." Petaltail worked awkwardly to fit the other two bundles in her maw. Redwing followed behind her.
His mind wandered as they padded back to camp. It wandered to subjects it probably shouldn't have touched. He watched the deputy's feathery tail sway in step with her lovely hips. The Mystic stared after her form lustfully. Love was out of the question for his profession and with Petaltail already the deputy of the Tribe, she could hardly be bothered by the affections of some cat like him. Never the less...
He almost ran smack into her when she stopped at the top of the ridge that lead back down to camp. Redwing took a couple seconds to regain his bearings. He padded around the deputy and half skidded half fell down the side of the ravine. If there ever was a cat that lacked grace, it was him. Redwing trotted back into the recesses of his den and promptly dropped the leaves on the cave floor. His maw twisted into shapes that betrayed his displeasure at their bitter taste. The deputy followed him in, still dutifully carrying her two bundles of leaves. Not wanting to be rude, he padded up to Petaltail.
"Let me get one of those for you." Redwing closed his jaws around the protruding end of a bundle of coco leaves. He brushed her muzzle in the exchange and shrank back as if he had been struck. The Mystic was sure that if the blush couldn't be seen through is fur, she could hear the beating of his heart.
